Senator Manny Pacquiao finally responded after his interview with journalist Karen Davila yesterday became controversial.
In his official statement, Pacquiao who dropped high school in the past because of poverty urged the netizens to calm down and stop criticizing Davila, saying that he was not offended by the way how he was questioned by the journalist.
“I was never offended by her manner of questioning. Isa po siyang batikan sa larangan ng broadcasting. Kung may formal training sa boxing, may formal training din sa education,” Pacquiao said.
“I continue learning not only in academics but also in life. Pakiusap lang po: Let us stop the hate. Magtrabaho lang po tayo para sa kapakanan ng ating bayan,” he added.
On Thursday, Davila received a tremendous amount of criticisms from the netizens after pushing her question about Pacquiao’s education and future political plans.'
During the interview, Pacquiao who shared that he’s currently studying to get a college degree as a preparation for his future political plans got an awkward follow-up question from Davila.
This is what they discussed:
Davila: Pero teka lang, tinatapos mo ba ang college degree ngayon o hindi?
Pacquiao: Tinatapos.
Davila: Anong eskwelahan?
Pacquiao: Eskewelahan? Dito lang.
Davila: Saan yun?
Pacquiao: Dito sa Maynila
Davila: Malaking istorya un, anong pangalan ng eskwelahan?
Pacquiao: Ibubulong ko na lang sa yo mamaya.
Several netizens have been offended by Davila’s way of questioning, saying that the renowned journalist was insisting on her questions even if Pacquiao already kept refusing to answer.
Some are saying that the interview of Davila to Pacquiao is ‘unprofessional’.
“Why do you need to rub it in on someone’s face that he is not qualified in case the basis for education is college degree? That is absolutely awful on the part of Karen Davilla.” Facebook page KapitBahay said.
Blogger Sass Rogando Sasot also reacted on the controversial interview.
“Here in Europe, when I say I’m studying, the next question is: What are you studying? Which university seldom come up. Where is always about the place and not the name of the university.” Sasot said.
“Karen Davila is NOT interested in what Manny Pacquiao is studying. She’s interested in what social climbers are interested: anything that would bolster one’s status.” she added.
According to the constitution, a senatorial or presidential candidate only required to know how to read and write.
However, several politicians are pushing on adding a college degree requirement for the presidential and senatorial aspirants.
